SALEM, Ore. -- A sheriff's deputy who was shot after a car chase through a rural area east of Salem Friday evening is recovering from non-life threatening injuries, authorities said.

The deputy was reportedly chasing a car thief in the remote area near 117th Avenue Northeast and Sunnyview Road Northeast, said Sgt. Chris Baldridge with the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

Multiple shots were fired, and according to reports, the deputy was hit in the upper leg. A Life Flight helicopter rushed the deputy to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland.

The suspect was shot and taken in an ambulance to the hospital, Baldridge said.

"It's one of the few times the hair stands up on the back of your neck," Baldridge said at the scene of the shooting Friday night. "Those are the times you really rely on your training and you dig into that deep place and respond for your friends."

Deputies said there was no immediate threat to the public but were encouraging neighbors to remain indoors.

After darkness set in Friday, investigators returned Saturday to process the scene.
