PORTLAND – A group calling themselves "The Real Occupy Portland" has claimed responsibility for vandalism at two local banks over the weekend.

However, the protesters in the Lownsdale Park and Chapman Square encampments said the vandals are not part of their core movement.

Early Saturday, someone broke windows at both the Chase Bank and the Wells Fargo Bank located along NE Sandy Boulevard near 44th.

Members of the splinter group "The Real Occupy Portland" said they believe the methods used by the "Occupy Portland" general assembly were ineffective, and that is why they took action on the banks.

The general assembly has disassociated itself with the splinter group and said they do not support any type of violent protests.

They released a statement to the media and police which said, “The Real Occupy Portland and the 99%" is not connected with these acts of violence and does not condone any vandalism or violence.”
