BROOKS, Ore. – A neighbor fed up with a farmer who was using loud ‘bird cannons’ fired a shotgun over the farmer’s head then beat him with the gun.

The farmer was firing the cannons to scare off birds from his blueberry crop around 8 p.m. in the 8700 block of Umatilla Street NE, Marion County officials said.

That’s when the farmer says a neighbor, 37-year-old Luke Chapman, started firing his 12-gauge shotgun over the farmer’s head.

After Chapman ran out of rounds, he began hitting the farmer with his gun.

Chapman was arrested and charged with unlawful use of a weapon, assault and reckless endangerment.

Police also seized several guns and ammunition from Chapman’s home.
