PORTLAND – Two men conned a North Portland business owner out of thousands of dollars in a fake Chinese gold scam, police said.
The two suspects came into the Vieng Lao Oriental Food Center at 1032 North Killingsworth on Dec. 21 looking to sell Chinese-style gold ingots for cash, said Sgt. Pete Simpson with Portland police.
The owner negotiated a price with the suspects who provided a sample made of real gold. The victim bought the ingots and took them to a jewelry store only to learn they were fake.
The owner lost thousands of dollars in the rip-off and wants others in the Chinese community to be on the lookout.
The suspects were described as well-dressed Chinese men around 38 to 45 years old with short black hair. They were both around 5-foot-4, weighing 150 to 160 lbs. Both men spoke Mandarin Chinese with a Hunan accent, the victim told police.
Anyone with information was asked to call police at 503-823-0272.
