After the cataclysmic eruption of 1980 the mountain sat relatively quietly with only a small series of tremors and emissions keeping geologists busy. That was unil October of 2004 when the mountain came back to life. Large scale seismic activity was recorded in the crater and in a series of spectacular events, the cauldron and lava dome were pushed hundreds of feet higher. At one point sending a block of new stone called the 'whaleback',  because of it's distinctive appearance, 1400' above the 1980 dome. KGW Chief Meteorologist Matt Zaffino reports.
