SCIO, Ore. – A 91-year-old man with dementia drowned in a creek in Scio sometime this week, according to investigators.

Ashby "Al" Getz was last seen reading a book inside a home along Thomas Creek Road on June 30. He was reported missing soon afterward, prompting a search, according to Linn County Undersheriff Jim Yon.

Deputies searched the immediate area around the residence and nearby roads. A dive team also scoured Thomas Creek, which backs up to the property, and a helicopter crew with the Oregon Air National Guard searched by air.

Late Tuesday morning, the helicopter crew spotted Getz in the middle of Thomas Creek and the dive crew recovered his body.

Getz was taken to Aasum Funeral Home.
