SALEM -- Family and friends on Tuesday afternoon honored a Salem teenager who drowned at a popular recreation area earlier this week.

Sean Kaleopa, a 14-year-old Houck Middle School student was swimming at Three Pools Recreational area in rural Marion County when he vanished underwater.

Relatives later spotted him at the bottom of a pool and several people formed a human chain to get him out of the water.

People did CPR on Kaleopa to try to revive him, but they weren't able to save him.

Tuesday’s memorial included a special balloon release in Kaleopa’s honor.

People described him as a big brother to everyone.
