CORNELIUS, Ore. -- Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest for Oregon's wine tasting rooms.
May is Oregon Wine month and Memorial Day weekend gives wine lovers a chance to sample many of the state's 450 wineries.
Ardiri Winery in Cornelius celebrated its third anniversary Monday. The name means “taking a risk” or “consumed by fire,” the owner said.
And Ardiri has an unusual business model: Make wine and sell it to neighbors and just a few restaurants. And pinot is king.
Many wineries in the state that aren’t usually open to the public rolled out the welcome mat Monday.
Travelers braved the downpours and enjoyed wine country.
“It's just an experience to be able to look out and see the vineyards, see the grapes just get to taste everything,” said Wendy Mosley of Lake Oswego.
“We go in quest of pinot noir in the Willamette Valley, or anywhere in Oregon,” said Scott Jeffrey of Hillsboro.
This weekend marked the 23rd year for Memorial Day wine tours. The next big weekend for wine tours will be Thanksgiving.
