MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) -- After the Oregon Legislature voted last month to allow cities and counties to put one-year moratoriums on medical marijuana dispensaries, many local jurisdictions started working on ordinances to do just that.

In Southern Oregon, the Medford City Council voted Thursday to enact a permanent ban on pot shops, even though the Legislature decided not to allow local jurisdictions to go that far.

Medford officials argue that the city's home rule authority gives them the power they need to bar pot shops. And they are against granting business licenses to deal in a drug that's still illegal under federal law.

KTVL reports that litigation is likely. The council revoked the business license of a local dispensary, and the owner said she'll go to court over it.
