BOARDMAN, Ore. -- Law enforcement officers in northeastern Oregon say they chased and eventually arrested a masked man who had been reported swerving in and out of traffic on Interstate 84.

Morrow County Undersheriff Steven Myren says law enforcement cars tried to stop westbound blue SUV on Tuesday afternoon as it approached Boardman but the driver waived his hands in the air, honked his horn and kept on going.

The vehicle was traveling between 50 and 70 mph. Spike strips that flattened the vehicle's two front tires eventually ended the chase. Myren says the driver initially claimed to have a bomb.

Officers found a loaded handgun on the passenger seat, a machete under the driver's seat and a large kitchen knife under a floor mat.

The undersheriff says 32-year-old Adolfo Mendez Lopez of Hermiston was arrested for investigation of attempting to elude police and reckless driving. He was booked into the Umatilla County Jail. Myren says Boardman police and the Gilliam County sheriff's office helped in the pursuit.
