PORTLAND – A man was hit by a marked police car early Saturday morning after he ran into traffic, the Portland Police Bureau said.
At around 2:23 a.m. Saturday, 34-year-old Hiyabo Demsus went into the roadway on West Burnside Street at Northwest 2nd Avenue and was struck by a marked police car, according to officers.
The driver, 4-year PPB veteran Officer Caleb Honl, called for an ambulance and began to treat Demsus, said police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson.
Demsus was apparently suffering from a heroin overdose. He was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he was in fair condition Sunday morning.
Investigators said Demsus was running southbound against the crosswalk signal when he was hit.
