PORTLAND -- A man was shot to death late Monday evening in Northeast Portland and police said they were looking into whether the incident was gang-related.
Police were dispatched about 8:45 p.m. to an apartment near 42nd and Ainsworth and found a man with a gunshot wound to the chest.
He was declared dead at the scene. Police later identified the victim as 26-year-old Deandre Newman and ruled the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds. They said he was related to Aaron Campbell, a man shot and killed by police in January 2010.
A neighbor told KGW she heard about eight shots, and the sound of a car racing away.
Emergency crews used ladders to remove people -- including children -- from inside the home to safety.
"Sometimes your past follows you and there’s nothing you can do and there’s no reason why things happen there’s just ignorant people in this world and it’s for us to change that and to do things different," neighbor Lucinda Williams said.
The incident was being investigated as possibly gang-related, said Lt. Robert King.
"For them to have to come in and take them out the window fills your heart and to know that’s a loss in their lives and it’s a tragedy," neighbor Roger Briggs said. "Anywhere you go you know you can’t just say things aren’t going to happen in your neighborhood anymore. Those times have passed."
