PORTLAND -- A man was shot late Wednesday evening near SE 135th and Division and later died at the hospital from gunshot wounds, according to Portland Police Bureau spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson.

The victim was identified Thursday as Larry Ma, 18, of Portland. Friends said he has just graduated from David Douglas High School and was a popular student.

The person who shot him has not been captured.

“There is too much gun violence in this city. While detectives are still investigating the circumstances behind Ma’s death, one thing is clear: Easy access to guns means that altercations on our streets too often lead to murder,” Mayor Sam Adams said Thursday.

Portland Police were called to SE 135th Avenue and Sherman just after 10:15 p.m. after reports of a shooting.

They found Ma suffering from life-threatening injuries and he was rushed to an area hospital. Several surrounding blocks were cordoned off along 135th, from Harrison to Division.

No suspects were found.

Detectives believe that Ma was shot while sitting alone inside his Mercedes, north of where officers found him. Then, they believe Ma drove his car southbound for a few blocks and crashed, Simpson said.

"The driver-side door had three bullets in it," said witness Cathy Osburn.

Police have not determined if the shooting is gang or drug related, he said.

Police found the blue, two-door Mercedes which had plowed through fencing along 135th at Sherman. They said Ma was still inside, bleeding severely and moaning.

Thursday, friends remembered Ma as a young man who was the life of the party. They said he loved fixing cars, video games, rap music and break dancing.
