SALEM – A man was hit by a pickup truck on Interstate 5 after police pulled his car over and he took off running in Salem, police said.
Just after 11 p.m., an Oregon State Police trooper tried to pull over 26-year-old Francisco Montalvo for having a broken headlight on Blossom Street Northeast near Niles Avenue Northeast, said Lt. Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police.
Montalvo sped off but his vehicle became disabled half a mile down the road. He then got out, staggered around, urinated, and made suicidal threats, Hastings said.
While the trooper waited for backup, Montalvo got back into the car and tried to drive but his tires burned heavy smoke, Hastings said.
The smoke concealed the car and Montalvo ran away into the darkness.
Ten minutes later, police learned Montalvo was hit by a pickup in the northbound lanes of I-5. He was taken in an ambulance to the hospital with serious injuries.
