PORTLAND -- The body of a man was found along the Willamette River waterfront Tuesday in Portland after temperatures dipped below freezing across Oregon.

Portland police said investigators determined 22-year-old Michael Ellis, of Southeast Portland, died from hypothermia.

A rememberance was being held Wednesday night at Waterfront Park to remember him.

His body was found in a partially-frozen fountain near the Rose Festival building.

Police said it appeared he had taken off his clothes and got into the water -- actions consistent with hypothermia, in which the brain can fool the body into a need to cool down.

Police want to hear from anyone who may know about the hours prior to his arrival at Waterfront Park. Anyone with information about Ellis should call Detective Chris Traynor at (503) 823-0541.

Family and friends said they would be meeting at 7 p.m. to leave flowers and light candles near the Portland Spirit ticket office.
