SILVERTON -- Crews had to rappel down to the body of man found Saturday at the base of Butte Creek Falls east of Silverton, near Scotts Mills.

The body of Frank Alarid, 42, of Salem was spotted by a hiker about 10:30 a.m. The manner of death appears to be a fall from the top of the 78-foot-tall falls, said Marion county sheriff's office spokesman Don Thomson.

Rescue crews from six agencies were involved in the recovery. They had to rappel from 150 to 200 feet down a ravine to reach the body.

The body was recovered about 7 p.m. Volunteers continued to comb the area searching for clues on the cause of death, and an autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.
