TROUTDALE, Ore. -- A fire Thursday night in Troutdale took the life of an 87-year-old man.

Neighbors noticed smoke and flames coming from a home in the 3800 block of Southeast 302nd Avenue just after 8 p.m., said Gresham Fire Chief Scott Lewis.

When crews arrived, the smoke and fire were too intense for them to enter the home. After firefighters got the flames knocked down, they went in and found Donald Krebs in the living room near the front door.

Crews gave him CPR for about 30 minutes but their efforts were unsuccessful.  He died at the scene.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
