SHERIDAN, Ore. -- A 51-year-old man died Thursday after he was attacked by a man with hammer in a Sheridan adult care center, according to the Yamhill County sheriff's office.

Ronald McKenzie was found about 2 a.m. Wednesday in his room at the Deer Meadows Assisted Living Center, suffering from head and face injuries with a hammer by his side.

He was taken to Salem Hospital in critical condition. He died with his family at bedside, police said.

After the attack, police took Nathan Brewer, 51, into custody at the care center. He initially was accused of first-degree assault.

The investigation into the attack continues and police ask anyone with information to call the Yamhill County Special Investigations Unit at 503-434-7508.
