ESTACADA, Ore. -- An Estacada man died after he was hit in the head by a falling tree while cutting wood in the Mount Hood National Forest Thursday afternoon.
Two men were improperly cutting a Douglas Fir tree that was between 130 and 150 feet tall near Lake Harriet, according to Sgt. Nathan Thompson of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.
"They used a chain saw to cut the tree and a chain attached to a truck that was then hooked to the tree. When the tree fell the top rotten section of the tree broke off and fell separately from the main tree hitting one of the men," Thompson said.
The uninjured man ran for help at a nearby ranger station and medical crews performed first aid, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Thompson said the victim was in his 60s from Estacada. His identity has not yet been released.
