ST. HELENS, Ore.  -- A St. Helens man was arrested Sunday evening after reportedly shooting his mother in the abdomen earlier in the day and then hiding in an attic with a handgun.

Robert W. Terry, 21, remained in the Columbia County jail Monday morning. His mother Dana D. Terry, 50, was taken to Legacy Emanuel hospital in critical condition.

Police got a call shortly before 5 p.m. that a woman had been shot at 1000 Railroad Avenue.  Dana Terry met the arriving officers, Sheriff Jeff Dickerson said.

Police were told that Robert Terry may be hiding in the attic with the .357 Magnum used in the shooting.

Tactical police were called and he surrendered shortly before 10 p.m.

Terry was accused of first-degree assault, recklessly endangering, pointing a firearm at another person, and menacing.
