LINN COUNTY, Ore. – A 26-year-old cold case may be solved after police arrested a suspect Monday for murdering a man in 1987 in Linn County.
In 1987, 35-year-old Thomas Hyland was reported missing from Linn County by an associate, who said he was likely a victim of homicide.
In 1989, mushroom pickers found the remains of Hyland in Sweet Home, Ore. Detectives determined that Hyland was murdered and a gun was involved, according to Undersheriff Bruce Riley of the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.
During the investigation, 25-year-old Dennis Beach was identified as a possible suspect, as he and Hyland had been inmates together at the Oregon State Penitentiary in early 1987. No arrests were made.
In 2008, detectives began pursuing new leads on the case. On Monday, Beach was arrested in Dayton, N.V. for Hyland’s murder. He was taken to a Nevada jail.
Anyone with information about the case was asked to contact the Linn County Sheriff's Office at 541-967-3950.
