LA CENTER, Wash. -- This holiday season, a southwest Washington family is giving back to hundreds of military families whose loved ones are are serving overseas.
Stephen Boynton and his family run La Center Farms and they are donating 400 of their doug firs toward the nationwide program, Trees for Troops.
The trees will be cut, bailed and loaded into two large Fed Ex trucks and then shipped off to Luke Air Force Base in Arizona and Fort Lewis, right here in the Pacific northwest.
"This is our way of saying 'thank you' to the troops and bring a little bit of the family over to the military," said Boynton.
Boynton is a 20-year Coast Guard veteran who said he is quite aware of the hardships of being away from home during the holidays.
"The military is here to protect us, and they're not appreciated as much as they should be," he said.
This is the second time the family has made the donation and this year's generosity equals $2,800.
"If your husband was deployed or your wife and you're home with the kids, [you] would be so worried about them," said Lissa Boynton.
She added, "It's just one small way to bring some good cheer."
