EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- A white supremacist has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a Cottage Grove man in a brazen, home-invasion robbery.
Robert P. Smith pleaded guilty Friday to aggravated murder and other charges in the January 2012 shooting death of 48-year-old Terry Fruichantie.
Prosecutor Erik Hasselman said Smith and an accomplice broke into the home wearing masks and demanding cash. The victim was shot after telling the men he didn't have money. He died in front of his father.
The Register-Guard newspaper reports that the victim's mother, Barbara Preuss, would have preferred to see Smith get the death penalty. She said she was willing to accept a life in prison because it's unlikely a death sentence would ever be carried out.
