PORTLAND – A license plate reading device was the tool that led to a stolen car arrest near Clackamas on Thursday morning.
The car was identified by a Clackamas County Sheriff’s Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) system as it passed a deputy during a traffic stop on I-205.
The infrared cameras are able to scan a license plate and match it against a database of stolen vehicles almost instantly.
Deputies were able to follow the stolen 1979 Mercedes Benz at legal speeds and the driver pulled over as soon as he saw the deputy’s flashing lights.
The driver, 34-year-old Zacharias Varsamaswas was arrested on a warrant for burglary and unauthorized use of motor vehicle. Three other passengers were cited for unauthorized use of motor vehicle.
