KELSO, Wash. – A hit-and-run accident turned into a violent shootout between police and a suspect Saturday morning in Kelso.

The suspect was killed and a police officer was shot just before 11 a.m. at a home in the 400 block of Northwest 5th Avenue, said Capt. Darr Kirk with Kelso Police.

It all started at about 10 a.m., when police responded to a hit-and-run in the 200 block of Northwest 8th Avenue, Kirk said.

The driver fled the scene and police quickly learned he was hiding in a nearby home.

The suspect reportedly had a felony warrant out for his arrest and officers from three departments tried to contact him in the home.

The suspect at first would not come out of the house.

Then at 10:44 a.m., the suspect came out of the house armed with a gun and began shooting at officers and deputies, hitting one, Kirk said.

Police returned fire, killing the suspect.

The officer that was shot was taken to the hospital, treated and released.

Police have not identified the name of the suspect, but KGW spoke with the suspect's wife and she identified the man as 26-year-old Jesse McMillan.
