KALAMA, Wash. -- A Boil Water Order in effect since early Monday has been rescinded by Kalama city officials, who have determined that it's safe to drink from the tap after reservoirs ran dry over Sunday night.
All water customers who had shut off water or otherwise stopped using it were given the "all clear" on Tuesday just before 5 p.m., according to the city.
Businesses, schools and hospitals were also advised to turn-on water fountains, ice machines, soda machines and any other equipment turned off since Sunday
An emergency water order was issued over Sunday night after a waterline break emptied the drinking water supply. Subsequently, the Washington State Department of Health issued a Boil Water order for anyone who hadn't lost all water resources. More: City of Kalama Emergency Water Order
The water main break was caused by an undescribed mechanical problem. However, it was compounded by "maintenance issues" requiring city officials to take off-line another 2 million gallon reservoir.
Most city residents were waterless all day Monday and through Tuesday afternoon as a result of the main break.
Anyone with questions was urged to first check the City of Kalama website and then call if answers were not found online. Two numbers were available during business hours: (360) 673-4554 or (360) 673-3706.
