COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) -- A Coos Bay man who built a homemade bunker has been found guilty of menacing, possession of a destructive device and possession of a short-barreled rifle.
The World newspaper reports that Jay Yarbrough's legal troubles started in June, when he reacted violently to his wife's suggestion that he visit a hospital because of chest pain.
Yarbrough fired an AR-15 rifle toward the ceiling. He then followed his wife to another room, pushed her to the ground and kicked her.
The wife alerted police to a crawlspace under the master bedroom. Inside, police found firearms, ammunition, gunpowder and hand grenade components.
Yarbrough described himself to police as a "prepper" and said he built the bunker and obtained the weapons to protect his family.
Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 12.
