PORTLAND -- An Oregon inmate mistakenly released from a Portland jail earlier this week has turned himself in to deputies, Multnomah County officials told KGW.

Members of a warrant strike team had called 22-year- old Stephen Jamaal Reed on Wednesday evening and he eventually agreed to return to jail. He surrendered late Wednesday night in KMart parking lot at NE 122nd and Sandy.

Reed was less than three months into a 19-month prison sentence for dealing heroin. He was moved from the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem to Multnomah County last Friday so he could appear in court in a different case.

He was convicted of cocaine possession on Monday and a judge sentenced him to probation. Within hours, jail officials let him walk free.
