GALES CREEK, Ore. – A rescue was under way Thursday evening for an injured man who fell at Gales Creek Campground near Banks.

The victim fell 25 to 50 feet down a ravine Thursday afternoon, according to U.S. Coast Guard officials.

A helicopter was dispatched to the scene around 4:30 p.m.

Officials said the hiker likely has broken ribs and may have other injuries, and crews air-lifted the injured man around 5:30 p.m.

Shortly after, one of the helicopter rotors hit tree branches, causing the chopper to land at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center on Highway 26 in southwest Portland.

The victim was being treated at St. Vincent and crews were assessing the chopper to determine if they could fly back to Astoria Thursday night.
