STOCKTON, Calif. -- A convicted felon who became a viral sensation after his mug shot earned him the nickname "hot convict" last month has landed a modeling contract, even though he's still behind bars.

It was Jeremy Meeks' mugshot that earned him all the attention.  The 30-year-old was rounded up with several other men in Stockton, California, and slapped with felony weapon charges. Meeks, a convicted felon, spent nine years in prison, and admitted that police found a pistol in his trunk. But he has insisted he's no longer a gangster.

The possible gangster status didn't seem to hurt the California con's latest job offer.  He landed a deal with Blaze Modelz, despite still being in jail, according to Huffington Post.  He reportedly signed a modeling contract for $30,000.  That won't cover his $1 million bail, but it's a start.

Controversy quickly sprung up over the ethics of giving Meeks this type of fame and recognition since he is a criminal — who happens to have gorgeous blue eyes.

Gina Rodriguez, Meeks' new talent agent, assured that the criminal activity is in his past, so this could be the "ultimate rags-to-riches story."

"He has a chance to have an amazing career, and change his life for his family," she said, in an interview with FoxNews.com.

Rodriguez has taken on other controversial clients, including 'Octomom' Nadya Suleman, and most recently, V. Stiviano, the woman at the center of the Donald Sterling scandal.
