HOOD RIVER, Ore. -- The Oregon Forestry Department now says a wildfire burning on forest land owned by Hood River County in northern Oregon covers only about 12 acres, not 50.

In a statement, state officials said the fire burning 12 miles south of the community of Hood River was reported early Wednesday morning. It initially spread quickly in dry logging debris, then slowed as it exhausted the fuel source.

Full containment is expected by Thursday evening.

Steep, rugged terrain on part of the site has made it challenging for firefighters to build a line around the Owens Fire.
