PORTLAND – A man and his 6-year-old nephew were found safe Friday morning after they were reported missing Thursday while hiking near Multnomah Falls, deputies said.

Dean Adams, 50, from Estacada and his nephew Kyle Miller from Gresham were dropped off at Larch Mountain around 4 p.m. and were supposed to meet their party at the falls three hours later.

When the two failed to show up that evening, friends called police.

Search teams were dispatched from Multnomah Falls and Larch Mountain and discovered the two around 10:25 a.m., said Lt. Derrick Peterson with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.

The two hikers were checked by medical staff after they were discovered near Horsetail Falls, about three miles from Multnomah Falls. The two were reportedly doing fine.

The battery on a cell phone the two ran down Thursday night and they got turned around. The two decided to hunker down and wait for the morning when they were found.
