PORTLAND -- A teacher at Gresham's Hauton B. Lee Middle School has been accused of sex abuse. No students were involved in the allegations, according to police and Reynolds School District officials.

John Beasley was arrested Wednesday on rape and sodomy charges, said Lt. Mike Marshman of the Portland Police Bureau. He added that Beasley and the victims knew each other.

Beasley sat stoic in court Thursday as he heard the charges.

Marshman said the victims were under 18 years old and the investigation does not appear to be related to the school.  Beasley has been placed on paid leave from his position as a middle school math teacher.

"I just think it's sad. I think that we put our kids in the hands of people that we trust every day and then this kind of stuff happens," said Cindy Wright, whose daughter is an 8th grader at H.B. Lee

Principal Dan Kimbrow sent out a statement to parents Thursday that reads, in part:

This letter is to inform you that we learned that Mr. John Beasley was arrested by the Portland Police Bureau and charged with six crimes related to sex abuse or acts on September 18, 2013. At this time, we do not have any reason to believe any Reynolds School District children were involved in these charges.

At this time, we do not have any additional information. We will keep you informed with additional facts. If you have any relevant information to the case, please contact the non-emergency police line at (503) 823-3333.

District spokeswoman Andrea Watson told KGW Beasley is a math teacher at H.B. Lee and he was placed on paid leave when the allegations surfaced. He was schedule to appear in court Thursday afternoon.
