GRESHAM, Ore. – Police are investigating a 2-alarm fire in Gresham they said may have been intentionally set while a man was experiencing an apparent psychotic episode Sunday.
The fire broke out around 1 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 4700 block of West Powell Boulevard.
A neighbor called 911 to report a domestic situation. Police arrived to find a man, later identified as 25-year-old Arsenio Lee Jumping Bull, barricaded in the burning second-story apartment, and after a short while, authorities noticed the apartment was on fire.
The man then ran out of the apartment as the unit became completely engulfed in flames.
Crews from Portland Fire & Rescue along with Gresham fire arrived quickly. Firefighters attacked the blaze from an adjacent apartment and extinguished the flames.
Jumping Bull does not know anyone who lives at the apartment and may have been visiting relatives in another unit, police said. He was taken into custody by Gresham police and treated for smoke inhalation.
Up to four units were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross was assisting those families.
