MT. HOOD NATIONAL FOREST – About 87 inches of snow have fallen on Mt. Hood in the last ten days, making it a great destination for skiers, but a treacherous climb for drivers.
Rain and relatively warm temperatures have been keeping the roads wet throughout the daytime. At night that water freezes and the icy roads become very slick.
Anyone headed up to Timberline or over to Mt. Hood Meadows was required to use chains Wednesday. Snow showers and slight sun breaks were moving through most of the day.
A winter weather advisory was in effect through Wednesday night, warning drivers to be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibility. The snow level was expected to be around 2,000 feet.
Portland has had the 4th-wettest year on record in 2012.
