LAKE OSWEGO, Ore – Crews putting out a house fire at a Lake Oswego condo Monday to find a couple seeking refuge on the balcony and another couple asleep in their beds, firefighters said.

Andrew Wong was awakened by a strange noise Monday morning and soon discovered a fire outside his front door, said Deputy Lake Oswego Fire Marshal Gert Zoutendijk.

Wong’s girlfriend called 911 and said that she, Wong and Wong’s two grandparents could not get out of the building, Zoutendijk said.

Firefighters arrived, put out the fire, found Wong and his girlfriend on the balcony and the grandparents still asleep in bed.

The grandparents were then woken up and all four were evacuated. There were no injuries reported, Zoutendijk said.

"This could have resulted in a very sad situation had Wong not woken up,” Zoutendijk said. "The only smoke alarm in the condo had been taken down and was the main reason the grandparents did not wake up".

The fire caused $15,000 in damages and investigators were continuing to look into the cause.
