OREGON CITY -- A little girl suffered a serious concussion after falling into a crawl space Monday evening.

Authorities said the three-year-old was playing near the opening of the crawl space. She fell about six feet.

"We don't know if she hit the concrete footing but she probably landed head first and when firefighters arrived she was unconscious," said Battalion Chief Jamie Karn.

She was airlifted to OHSU where she was listed in critical condition and improving.

"I've never seen an accident like this," said Karn.  It's not something that happens often."

Investigators urged parents who have a crawl space to lock access to it or cover it with boxes.
