PORTLAND – The most recent gang-related shooting in Portland was Tuesday. That brings this year’s total to 52 gang-related violent crimes so far in 2014.
This time last year, there were 35 gang shootings.
Now, the Portland police gang enforcement team is adding extra patrols in response to the uptick in shootings.
That’s welcome news for Mika Ingram, a northeast Portland resident.
“There was a problem up here about two years ago when there was a gang member running alongside the house we were in so we had to stay in the house and we couldn't leave so that was pretty scary,” he said. “I feel like this area is more prone to gang related activity."
In addition to increased patrols, the city’s Office of Youth Violence Prevention will be holding a meeting Friday to discuss how to try and end gang violence in Portland.
