SALEM -- Friends say reckless behavior was far from the norm for a 17-year-old girl who died after falling off the trunk of a car in Salem.

Marisol Quesada was sitting on the trunk of a moving car with a 16-year-old girl early Saturday morning at a Walmart parking lot at 5250 Commercial St. NE, said Lt. Steve Birr of the Salem Police Department.

The girls flew off the trunk when the car made a turn. Quesada suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Oregon Health & Science University where she died Monday morning.

The other girl was expected to survive her injuries. The driver, 16, was not hurt.

Quesada was a student at North Salem High School. Grief counselors were on hand for school students Tuesday.

The sound of the fall will not be forgotten by friend Sabino Cortez.

"I heard Marisol scream, and I saw her fly off the car," he told KGW.

He and others said there were about 30 teens from North Salem and South Salem high schools who gathered Friday night in the parking lot to just hang out.

Matthew Swank was also a witness. He estimated the car was going as fast as 45 mph.

"She just got whipped off the side of the vehicle and smacked her head on the ground," he said.

Cortez ran to her side.

"I was holding her hand and calling her," he said, "and the last thing I saw was tears running through her face."
