HILLSBORO, Ore. – A former Hillsboro substitute teacher was found guilty Thursday of raping, sodomizing and sexually abusing a young girl.

A jury found Rafael Abinacer, 42, guilty on 11 counts of sodomy, rape, sex abuse, unlawful sexual penetration and using a child in a display of sexual conduct.

According to deputies, Abinacer had repeated sexual contact with a girl younger than 14.

Background: Hillsboro teacher accused of sexually abusing girl

Abinacer was formerly a special education assistant and bilingual assistant employed with the Hillsboro School District.

He was hired in March 2013 and worked 40 days at Lincoln Street Elementary, as well as one day each at eight other schools in the district.

Abinacer had previously been convicted of felony possession for a non-registered firearm in 1993, but due to the amount of time that had passed since the crime, he was still hired as a substitute teacher in Hillsboro.

His sentencing is set for July 28.
