PORTLAND -- After days of being docked on the Portland waterfront for Fleet Week, the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and the Royal Canadian Navy ships left Portland Monday morning.
The RCN brought its sail training vessel HCMS Oriole. The Navy brought the guided missile cruiser USS Lake Champlain and the guided missile destroyerUSS Spruance. The Coast Guard presence includes the cutters Alert from Astoria and the Cuttyhunk from Port Angeles, Wash.
The federal government's spending shutdown last year halted U.S. ship visits, along with the Navy's Blue Angels, as Congress squabbled with the Obama administration over the budget.
For decades, Fleet Week had been an annual showcase of vessels as they navigated up the Willamette River to downtown Portland. The ships dock at Portland's sea wall and are a magnet for Rose Festival visitors.
