LA CONNER, Wash. -- Witnesses say around a dozen boats were engulfed in flames by a fire that quickly spread in La Conner Friday afternoon.
Witnesses said the fire started around 4:40 p.m. at the Shelter Bay Marina. Dave Franklin, the manager of Shelter Bay Marina, said the fire started on one boat, which floated away and bumped into a few other boats. Those boats quickly caught on fire.
Franklin said one dock, which moors about 12 boats, was destroyed by the flames. He estimates around 20 boats were on fire, but other witnesses estimated it around 8-10 boats. Franklin said around 320 boats are moored at the Shelter Bay Marina.
Brooks Hatch, a resident who lives near the marina, said the Shelter Bay Marina is at the center of the La Conner community and that the fire was at the J Dock. Hatch said none of boats were live-aboards and were private boats moored at the marina.
Witnesses report Swinomish Fire crews were at the scene of the boat fire. No word yet on what caused the fire or if there were any injuries.
