GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) -- Federal authorities are reported looking into the case of a 5-year-old Grants Pass girl killed by a burst of gunfire from the room below, where a man used an assault rifle as a crutch to get up from the couch.
The Grants Pass Daily Courier reported that local authorities have turned down its request for records of the case, citing a federal investigation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Doug Fong of Medford wouldn't comment.
A Grants Pass man, Jon A. Meyer Jr., has been sentenced to more than six years in prison after a plea bargain that included charges of manslaughter and possession of a machine gun.
The prosecution and defense disagreed about how much Meyer knew about the weapon. Authorities said it was illegally modified to fire fully automatic.
