PORTLAND -- Family and friends gathered in the cold and rain Friday night to remember a woman hit and killed crossing a busy stretch of Powell Boulevard.
On Dec. 14, 70-year-old Valentine Khubeyeva was trying to cross Southeast Powell Boulevard in the 13300 block when she was hit by a GMC Yukon driven by a 67-year-old man, investigators said.
According to investigators, darkness, dense fog and the woman’s dark clothing were factors in the crash. Khubeyeva died late Friday night at an area hospital.
Neighbors want to make this stretch of road safer for pedestrians. They're pushing for sidewalks better lighting and more space on the shoulder of the road.
“This is a critical area. This is an area that has grown very quickly and the road has not developed along with it,” said Oregon Department of Transportation spokesman Don Hamilton.
ODOT said it’s added sidewalks, bike lanes, and crossing beacons to Powell Boulevard, and is considering more improvements.
State representative Shemia Fagan said she's pushing for more funding for the area.
