OREGON CITY, Ore. -- The Oregon City couple convicted of criminally negligent homicide in the faith-healing death of their son were sentenced Monday in Clackamas County Circuit Court to 16 months in prison.
A jury found Jeff and Marci Beagley guilty last month of failing to seek medical help for their 16-year-old son, who died in June 2008 from a urinary tract blockage. The Beagleys are members of the Followers of Christ, an Oregon City church that shuns most medical care in favor of prayer.
The Beagleys sought probation in lieu of prison time but Clackamas County Circuit Court Judge Steven Maurer instead sentenced one year and four months, each.
"Too many children have died," said Judge Maurer. "It has to stop."
