CASCADE LOCKS, Ore. – The driver who was killed after falling out of a moving van while fighting with his girlfriend Saturday on Interstate 84 near Cascade Locks has been identified, police said.
Austin Herd, 31, was driving a van just after 9 p.m. when he began a physical altercation with his girlfriend, Nicole Quintana, 30, who was in the passenger seat.
The van headed into oncoming lanes and hit a guardrail, said Lt. Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police.
Herd was reportedly not wearing a seat belt and fell out of the moving van through the driver’s side door. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Hastings said.
Quintana and passenger Jessy Walters, 18, were taken to the hospital, but were not injured from the crash. Quintana reportedly had minor injuries from the fight with the driver.
Herd, Quintana and Walters were traveling from Gavelston, TX to Portland to move in with Herd's relative, police said. He has previously lived in Northeast Portland.
The crash remained under investigation.
