PORTLAND -- At least nine Alaska flights were listed as canceled Monday morning. A number of flights on other airlines headed to airports in the mid-West affected by weather have been delayed.

PDX: Delayed or Canceled Flights

Dozens of flights were canceled or delayed at Portland International Airport Sunday on one of the busiest travel days of the year. According to an Alaska Airlines spokeswoman, many of the canceled flights were due to sick pilots and flight attendants

An estimated 50,000 travelers passed through PDX Sunday for the Christmas holiday, and scores of arriving flights from across the country were delayed, many for more than an hour.

A large storm hit the Midwest at the beginning of the travel weekend, which brought freezing rain, snow, ice, flooding and even tornadoes from the Louisiana Gulf Coast to eastern Canada.

Most of the longest delayed flights were arrivals from major cities like Chicago, Detroit, Denver, Dallas, Houston and Atlanta.

Explosive-sniffing golden retrievers were checking people and their bags as they entered the security line Friday. TSA employees said the dogs have been around since a training program began a few months ago, but they're much more visible on the high-traffic days.

AAA estimates a record 95 million Americans are traveling during the holidays. Most of them, however, are driving.

The roads will be busy. While most mountain passes are clear, drivers should be prepared with traction devices and emergency gear.
