PORTLAND -- The man killed in a crash that closed Highway 43 through the Tuesday evening commute was identified Wednesday as 73-year-old George Schaefer of Vancouver, police said.
The head-on crash was reported just after 3 p.m. at Southwest Riverside Drive (Hwy 43) and Southwest Radcliffe Road.
Schaefer was driving southbound on Highway 43 when he crossed over the center line and struck a northbound pickup pulling a trailer, Lt. Steve Alexander of the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.
Schaefer was pronounced dead at the scene and the two people in the pickup were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Alexander said.
The roadway was closed for five hours as investigators finished collecting evidence and the debris was cleared.
