CLATSKANIE, Ore. -- Rescue crews Saturday afternoon found the body of a man who witnesses said jumped off a fishing boat to save his toddler in the Columbia River.
Brant Hicks, 35, was able to rescue his young son and hand him up to Hicks' father-in-law, who was still on the boat. But he then slipped underwater and did not resurface, according to Rick Brown, who owns a nearby dock.
The family was out fishing Saturday in the Wallace Slough, near Clatskanie, when the boy fell into the water just after 11 a.m. He was taken to a Longview hospital for observation.
He was treated for hypothermia and released, family friend Kelly White said.
Salmon fisherman helped Columbia County and U.S. Coast Guard rescue crews search for Hicks throughout the afternoon. His body was recovered at about 5 p.m.
