MEDFORD, Ore. – Officers took 4-year-old child into protective custody after they found heroin and a handgun in a Clatsop County couple’s car Tuesday, police said.

Just before midnight, a state trooper pulled over 28-year-old Marie Johnson of Astoria (pictured left) and her 27-year-old passenger, Dustin Taylor of Seaside (pictured right), for speeding northbound on Interstate 5 near Central Point in Southern Oregon, said Lt. Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police.

Johnson’s 4-year-old son was also in the vehicle.

Police searched the vehicle and found a 9mm handgun, a small amount of heroin and other heroin paraphernalia related to possession and distribution of the drug, Hastings said.

Johnson and Taylor were arrested and booked in the Jackson County Jail on unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Taylor was also booked for unlawful possession of a firearm and felon in possession of a firearm.

The child was turned over to the Department of Human Services.
